Employment

The SS Ocean Phoenix is a 680’ fish processor that operates at sea 6-7 months per year in the Bering Sea. There is a summer and winter fishing season. The SS Ocean Phoenix has a crew complement of 222 on board of which the Steward department employs 14. Work begins in late May for a contract period of approximately 110 days, dependent on the quota. You join the ship in Seattle and return by ship to Seattle at the end of the fishing season.

The SS Ocean Phoenix is looking for new talent to join our Steward Department. We are in need of an experienced Baker. When working at sea the hours are 12 on and 12 off, seven days per week. Rooms are generally shared two to a room on opposite shifts. Room and Board are at no charge.

Pay is a daily guarantee with excellent opportunity to earn a production bonus for the season. Daily rate is established by the pay range for the position and the candidate’s experience. Benefits are offered after 3 months of employment including medical, dental, vision. Life Insurance and 401k enrollment are available after one year.

Qualifications

Making a living at sea requires a special kind of person. This is a physically, mentally and emotionally demanding work place. Employees must deal with conditions such as long working hours, isolation from family and friends, cramped living conditions and bad weather. You must be physically fit to work long hours on your feet. You must be able to lift 50 pounds on a frequent basis. You must be able to live and work with a diverse group of people.

This is a great opportunity to use your experience gained working in a restaurant, bakery, resort, or on board a ship. You must have at least 3 years of strong professional baking experience. You will be required to make breads, cookies, cakes, pies and donuts and other assorted desserts.

As a US Coast Guard inspected vessel, a Merchant Mariner Credential (MMC) and Transportation Worker’s Identification Credential (TWIC) and Food Handler Permit are required for the entire Steward Department. The company will assist with this process.
